Isonzo / Soca

Carlo Corazza offers a poignant and poetic tribute with this classical piano piece, a heartfelt composition that flows like the Isonzo, or Soča, through memory and loss.

Originally composed in 2014 to mark the anniversary of the Great War, the piece is dedicated to the river and the fallen. It reflects on the deep common humanity of soldiers once divided by borders and flags, whether Italian, Austrian, or Slovenian. As the river runs its course, unbothered by the lines drawn by man, so too flows this music – quietly sorrowful, yet luminous.

The frontispiece of the composition reads:

“L’Isonzo, scavando nella roccia nello scorrere secolare ed inesorabile, è stato spettatore delle sofferenze dei soldati, ma anche delle loro speranze e sogni d’amore…”

Echoes of that timeless stream guide the listener through scenes of both agony and tenderness. The piano’s voice begins soft and reflective, gradually unveiling shadows of pain and echoes of distant hopes. Yet as the piece unfolds, the water clears. A catharsis of light, peace, and love emerges in the final notes, like sunlight returning to emerald waters after the storm.

Meditative, intimate, and filled with grace, this composition is not just a remembrance, but a gentle reminder that beneath all difference, the same waters carry us home.
